Outlook and Gmail in one inbox: what works in 2026

Outlook.com, Hotmail and Live mailboxes used to work in any mail app with an app password. That is over: Microsoft now accepts only its own sign-in. Here is the honest state of things and the way that works today.

Short answer: Stjobno Mail cannot connect Outlook.com or Hotmail directly yet. Forward your Outlook mail to Gmail, connect Gmail here, and you read both in one inbox — replies then go out from Gmail.

What Microsoft changed

  • Since 16 September 2024 Outlook.com, Hotmail and Live take no passwords or app passwords from mail apps (IMAP, POP, SMTP).
  • Only Microsoft's own sign-in (OAuth) is accepted. Stjobno Mail does not have it yet.
  • Work and school Microsoft 365 mailboxes stopped taking passwords over IMAP back in 2022.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Connect Gmail to Stjobno Mail

Sign in, create an app password for Gmail and add the address.

  2. 2

Forward the Outlook mail to Gmail

Outlook on the web: Settings → Mail → Forwarding → turn it on, type your Gmail address and tick "Keep a copy of forwarded messages".

  3. 3

    Read both in one list

New Outlook mail arrives in Gmail and shows in Stjobno Mail. The originals stay in Outlook.

Outlook.com and Hotmail: not directly yet

Microsoft no longer lets mail apps sign in to Outlook.com, Hotmail, Live or Microsoft 365 with a password or an app password — only with its own sign-in (OAuth), which Stjobno Mail does not have yet. The way that works today is forwarding:

  1. Connect Gmail (or another mailbox) to Stjobno Mail.
  2. In Outlook on the web open Settings → Mail → Forwarding, turn forwarding on to that address and tick "Keep a copy of forwarded messages".
  3. New Outlook mail then arrives in that mailbox and so in Stjobno Mail. Replies go out from that address, not from the Outlook one.

In a work or school Microsoft 365 account the administrator may forbid forwarding outside the organisation.

Gmail: an app password

  1. Turn on 2-Step Verification in your Google Account: myaccount.google.com → Security.
  2. Open myaccount.google.com/apppasswords, type a name such as "Stjobno Mail" and press Create.
  3. Copy the 16-letter password Google shows — it is shown once — and use it in Stjobno Mail instead of your Google password.

IMAP is always on in Gmail, there is nothing to switch on. A work or school Google account connects only if its administrator allows app passwords.

Incoming (IMAP)
imap.gmail.com:993 · SSL
Outgoing (SMTP)
smtp.gmail.com:465 · SSL
Stjobno Mail fills these in by itself when you type the address.

Questions and answers

Will Stjobno Mail connect Outlook.com directly?

Not yet: it needs Microsoft's own sign-in (OAuth) inside the mail client, which Stjobno Mail does not have. Until then, forwarding is the way that works.

Can I answer from my Outlook address?

Not through forwarding: replies go out from the mailbox you forwarded to. To answer from the Outlook address, use Outlook itself for those letters.

Why do other mail apps say my Outlook password is wrong?

Because Microsoft switched off password sign-in for mail apps. The password is right; Outlook just no longer takes passwords from apps that do not use its own sign-in.

Do I have to pay?

No. Reading, writing and sorting the mail of all your mailboxes is free, with no limit on the number of mailboxes. Only the optional AI functions are paid.
